LIVED EXPERIENCES

HI!

Over the last few months things have really been… let’s use a phrase the kids say… “popping the f off.” Actually, it’s been the last few YEARS. A decade? IDK essentially the second I graduated from college, I stepped out into the world, looked around, and was like, “has everything always been ON FIRE like this?????” I mean that both literally and figuratively. I went to school in Boulder, Colorado and right after I graduated, there was a massive forest fire.

When I used to write this thing, it was filled with lols and jokes and I hoped that I could maybe break into a career in comedy writing (THAT is a joke, feel free to laugh at that). But the more I wrote, the more I realized I couldn’t just regale you with funny anecdotes about internet culture and my tragic dating life prior to 2016. I had to actually do the work to bring you along on the journey of understanding why the culture we consume is wildly problematic because it doesn’t accurately reflect the world in which so many of us live. It doesn’t reflect a “lived experience.” And part of modern culture is understanding lived experiences and how those experiences not only differ from our own, but how they impact the world around us in ways we often don’t even realize.

WHICH BRINGS ME TO THIS WEEK:

Megan Thee Stallion’s “Enter Thee Hottieverse” virtual reality concert

Despite the multiple paragraphs you see here there is not one big “hot topic.” My iPhone told me I spent an average of 5 hours a day online every day last week (down from a cool 7 about 4 months ago - don’t mean to brag) and everything just seemed SOOOOO BORING??? Like why am I not finding anything cool to share or talk about or on which to pontificate? Have I like… reached the edge of culture?? Yah, cool, Megan started her AR tour. Kourtney married Travis in Las Vegas. Someone made an NFT. Another problematic man is making headlines for something *super cool* he did and not the horrible thing he did. Nothing seems NEW. I’m trapped in a constant state of “I’ve seen this.”

There’s always a “but.”

I genuinely think we forget what it’s like to not be constantly pelleted by bad news and terrifying things happening live on our phones and TV screens. When I took a second to really think about why it seemed like “nothing was new,” I realized how terribly wrong that mentality was. I think my feeling this week that “nothing was happening” was just a realization that *everything* is always happening, but nothing REALLY bad happened to make headlines this week. And that further gave me pause because if you’re like me, maybe you spent last week gripped with panic that you were “forgetting something.” Or you had this weird feeling like: “wasn’t something supposed to… idk… happen??”

In reality, we, as humans, are NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PELLETED WITH HORRIBLE ATROCITIES HAPPENING LIVE IN FRONT OF US 24 HOURS A DAY!!!

Modern internet culture has warped our brains into believing horrible things are happening all of the time and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it. That’s fundamentally false. There ARE horrible things happening all of the time - the War in Ukraine, the Kramatorsk train station attack, global warming. But last week, there was no one huge piece of horrifying news that gripped all of us. Even in this “lull” we felt unsure of ourselves, and like we couldn’t really celebrate the big wins. And there WERE big wins! Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

Judge Jackson’s confirmation is an excellent example of the ways in which our lived experiences are starting to show themselves more in modern culture. More of us are starting to see ourselves in places where it matters. In places that make a difference in our country. Judge Jackson’s moment should have become more center stage - it should have forced us all to take a second and realize that perhaps progress is being made every day. We just forget to look for it. For every awful thing happening right now, there is a shade of light. A group trying to help. Someone stepping up and stepping in. But good news rarely makes it to the “outrage news” that we often see circulating online.

The internet and modern culture are designed to distract - to tear your eyes away from “reality” and entertain you to death.

BUT (my favorite word) when we have .09 seconds to breathe, to reflect, and to look a little deeper (this in itself is a privilege, I acknowledge that) we realize that there is plenty of light in this world. There is plenty of good. There is plenty of hope. By acknowledging that, we can all do better. We can take a break from the difficult, traumatic, horrible news and we can put our anxiety at bay and take action. We can reflect on the lived experiences of those around us and look at them first hand, and not through a screen. The internet has given us many things, but it’s also taken a great deal away from us. Two of those things are humanity and empathy - both fundamental to understanding differing lived experiences and fighting for a better world for those experiences to flourish.

Every morning I send my dad an email with three things I’m grateful for.

When I’m drowning in news or a heavy workload or just feeling deeply over THE WORLD, it can be really hard to write that note. But I know he appreciates it, so I force myself to do it anyway. Today I’m grateful for the shining sun, my faithful dog, my shelter, and TikTok. That’s four things. Last week was a good week. Not too much terribleness happened. And one REALLY good thing happened. Maybe we can all take that as a sign that things are healing. Maybe culture won’t be a dumpster fire of problematic nonsense forever. Maybe we are going to be okay.

AND OTHER NEWS

New Music WEEKLY

Harry Styles released new music for the first time since 2019 last week! I’m not a huge Harry fan, but I have been listening to his new single “As It Was” at least once a day since it came out.

Japanese Breakfast and Glass Animals were both in the Spotify studio last week. Both trending groups released singles with Japanese Breakfast covering “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver and Glass Animals covering “Solar Power” by Lorde.

New to the scene, Indie Pop/Folk artist Annie Di Russo released her new single this Tuesday called “Infinite Jest.” If you like her, you should check out her other songs like 9 Months, Coming Soon, and Don’t Swerve. She is my favorite new artist right now and 10/10 recommend checking her out.
